The Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead connects two defining Black Hills stories: the region’s mining past and scientific research reaching far into the future.

From gold mine to science laboratory

Homestake became one of the most significant mines in the Northern Hemisphere. Today, the underground workings support the Sanford Underground Research Facility, where researchers investigate particle and nuclear physics far beneath the surface.

What visitors can experience

Free interactive exhibits introduce the Homestake story, the city of Lead and the experiments taking place underground. Visitors can also look across the enormous Open Cut and see how the landscape reflects generations of mining history.
